Introduction to Malifaux: A Beginner's Guide

A Beginner’s Guide to Malifaux: Introduction.

“What IS that game?”

Ronin

If you're already an experienced tabletop gamer, you’re probably used to that question as the “laymen” would see you and your friends, hunched over a table, pushing tiny men around, trying to kill one another.

But as a tabletop gamer, you may not be used to being the one asking that question. And lots of you tend to ask “What IS that game?” the first time you saw people playing Malifaux.

Malifaux is visually different than just about any other tabletop game available today. What you’ll see is maybe a dozen miniatures between 2 people, shuffling around a small area, typically 3’ x 3’. The miniatures and themes seem way left of center. Not only do these armies, called “crews”, not look like the regimented, 2-3 color schemed marching units you see in tabletop games, they don’t even look like they’re in the same genre of game. For example- you might see a classic Western gunslinger firing its pistols…at a zombie prostitute…

Bolster Undead: Expanding Your Resurrectionist Collection

Written by Jake The Snake

Here is a small, opinionated effort to streamline the expansion of a player into their second or 3rd master within the Resurrectionist faction.  But any route you choose to pursue on your path to knowledge of the necrotic arts will undoubtedly be fulfilling.  The rezzers play like no other entity in wargaming. With this faction you can carry out your deepest and most depraved desires, borne by the mindless lust of the undead horde that bends only to your will.

Five Common Pitfalls in Malifaux

FIVE COMMON PITFALLS IN MALIFAUX

As a henchman and avid Malifaux player, I get to watch, referee, and play a fair amount of games. I’m involved with games of all levels of play, from someone just walking into the miniature hobby, to the most experienced and skilled tabletop players around. Yet it has occurred to me that there are some common pitfalls we make when we play or consider the game. New players tend to committ these with more frequency and severity, but that doesn’t mean that it never happens at the experienced levels of play, and I can personally confess to making these mistakes myself. My hope is that by writing this and reading it that all of us can refresh ourselves about these pitfalls when playing Malifaux. Let’s have a look at what I consider to be the 5 most common ones I’ve seen.

The Growing Resistance: A Tutorial for Neverborn Expansion

Written by MSG

Congratulations! By choosing the Neverborn, you have demonstrated exceptional critical thinking abilities and decision making skills in addition to displaying impeccable taste. By expanding your Neverborn collection you are enlisting in the greatest cause on either side of the breach: the freedom of Malifaux from the earth-side oppressors.

One of the questions I get asked most often is some variant of “what should I buy next?” Usually the person asking the question is considering a single model or blister; however I will often suggest that a new player expand his collection with a new starter box. This is because unlike most other miniatures games Malifaux requires lists to be built after strategies are determined, not before. This subtle difference plays an important role in how you should plan your purchases. By purchasing a second master early on, you give yourself a much more diverse set of choices to make when hiring your crew at the beginning of the game. The choice of second master to purchase is not a clear cut one and that is where this article comes in. Please keep in mind that these suggestions are just that: suggestions. No one can tell you how to spend your money so by all means, if what you want doesn’t fit with what I suggest then you should follow your own intuition. You will be much happier in the long run if you buy the models you want, not what some random guy on the internet tells you is best.

To be clear the scope of this article will be primarily limited to the contents of each master’s starter box. Aside from  a  few special exceptions that were made for models which I consider to be essential for a crews function, I will only be referencing models that are found inside the various master’s starter boxes. So save your angry email asking why I failed to mention the Twins, this article is not about models like that.
